NEW AMSTERDAM, BERBICE – Region Six students may be at a disadvantage in terms of foreign languages being offered on the schools’ curriculum. This year, only 12 students in East Berbice/Corentyne wrote Spanish at the Caribbean Secondary Examinations Certificate l (CSEC).Of the 16 secondary schools between New Amsterdam and Corriverton, including East Canje and Black Bush Polder, only the New Amsterdam Multilateral and Berbice High Schools submitted entries for Spanish at this year’s CSEC.The New Amsterdam Multilateral entered one student, and that child secured a grade three pass. Berbice High School sent up eleven candidates – three gained grade four and the remainder got grade five passes.Education Officer in Region Six, Shafiran Bhajan, indicated that steps are being taken to address the situation with Spanish. She is optimistic that there would be a turn around within the next two years. At Yakusari Primary School, a VSO heads the Spanish department and the foreign language is even offered at the annexe of that institution. “At several primary schools, Spanish is a part of the curriculum, since it is timetabled.
